To be honest, the Confederates burned the sawmills in the area before they took off and left Pensacola to the Yanks. It didn't set well with a lot of locals who were Confederate supporters either. In some cases it was the soldiers themselves that did something against the accepted realm of their Army on both sides. We could justify anything given enough time. War is ugly. Maybe the one thing that still sticks with many Southern born is the after war era.
