In the Grant/Sherman bio. I recently read there was a good chapter on this parade. Seems Sherman's men refused to wear the 'new issue' uniforms for the occasion and wanted to show the public just how it really was. I thought that was pretty good. Sort of an act of 'rebellion'. :)
I imagine the Germans and Japanese didn't appreciate the ticker tape parade the troops in the US got any more than the Southerner appreciates the GAR parade. One side has the glory, another has to contend with the mess left over after the war. It was in their home, not the victors. It's a human reaction. I understand both, but I have to say, the lack of a parade in the South hasn't been forgotten. Too much was lost and nothing to show but we still have our pride.
