For every example of dissention against the Confederate government in the South, a complimentary example exists of dissention against the Federal government in the North.
Dissention is a normal result of social interaction. Fairy tales aside, no kingdom on earth has ever existed where all the people loved the king whole-heartedly and made haste to do his bidding. It requires no great stretch of imagination to understand that people who dissented with the government could be found in both Massachusetts and South Carolina, Illinois and Alabama.
Along those lines, while visiting Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Ala., we encountered a man who identified himself as a descendant of a Federal military commander buried there. A Northern Democrat with a sterling combat record, the officer had been wounded while leading his regiment in battle. According to the family story, the government read his wartime mail, determined that he had expressed treasonable sentiments and had the officer arrested.
So it seems dissent could even be found in the army itself.
