Here's a representative example of an argument against the Confederacy which might be countered by facing the slavery issue directly. At least you'd have a starting point of agreement rather than the whole thing being adversarial from the get-go.
I don't suggest that this gentleman might be reasonable enough to dissuade otherwise, but there's no way you'll get anywhere with people like him by saying the war wasn't about slavery.
