New Jersey’s support of slavery in the late 1800s had two major components: economic and social. Many New Jersey companies, such as the shoe, leather, and clothing industries supplied slave states and, in particular, they supplied provisions to the owners for enslaved people. This may help explain New Jersey’s continuing support of slavery. I'm certainly glad that the ten or twelve slaves in New Jersey were finally free after the war.
