The harm was that the South totally relied on in exports for making money and imports from abroad to support normal life. Imports taxed left little monies left to the importer in which to buy Southern exports to sell abroad. Southerners were made to pay higher prices for imports while at the same time selling less exports. A very good portion, if not the majority, of deep South trading partners where foriegn; Cuba, Bahamas, South America, Central America, including of course, Europe. Any northern capitalist would seize on this in order to raise local prices to export to the South for more profit. Where were the monies raised from the Tarriffs spent? What federal subsidized projects, other than military, were helping the Southern infrastructure in the mid-19th century? How many railroads, water improvements, ect., were being funded in the South by these federal taxes? The lopsided improvements in the United States shows the favoritism going to the North, especially after the Republicans took control of the whole country.
