David, I think what Churchill was referring to was the fact that the war was inevitable. Even if there had never been a slave brought to this continent, the war would have occured because of the cultural and political differences. There was almost a war in the late 1820s and early 1830s over the tarrif of abominations. Then Lincoln raised the Southern tariffs even more and the rest is history.
