I can relate. My own kin came on to Arkansas, mostly after the Civil War ended.
The Bayne family rolled across the Mississippi from Shelby County into central Arkansas
in 1869, where they had a gin, ran a store, and raised cattle that grazed on the open range.
My great grandfather Dee Bayne sold cattle to the King Ranch, that fattened them and
took them to market.
My Vaughn and Temple connections were pretty well destroyed finanicially (sp?)
by the war and their children never got over losing most every thing. All that I knew
had this "proud but poor" attitude and most carried themselves right to the grave in that manner.
The Prices were totally wrecked by the Civil War leaving my ggg grandmother Mary Guthrie Price to
raise a house full of kids and her grandchild by herself, and this happened before she was 40.
How they survived is anyone's guess, but they did.
My Harper grouping came after the war, and farmed, and never had a lot except,
pride and the Baptist faith. Had some really smart Price/Loyd/Harper descendants though.
The Adams/Rodgers left north Georgia after the Civil War and ended up south of
Pine Bluff for about 20 years prior to rolling into what was by then Lonoke County.
Lots of pride in that bunch, and all liked to travel high wide and handsome.
