I agree. The majority of the first states to secede had a history of changing allegencies while territories, from France to Spain back to France to Britian back to Spain to America. The maps changed so much, and what area was controlled by who, changing flags was like changing socks. The situation in the Mississippi Territory with settlers in the late 1700ss was such that who ever could give them the best protection and economic security was who they supported. American settlers were negotiating with Spainish authorities for government, oversite at one point, since the U.S. government was seen as weak and non-responsive.
