My great great grandfather (Henderson Moffett Bell, often listed as H.M. Bell) was assistant quartermaster (to Michael Garber Harman) early in the war. Bell was a captain, later promoted to major. I believe A.W. (Asher Waterman) Harman succeeded M.G. Harman as (head) quartermaster, & H.M. Bell succeeded A.W. Harman. Bell served as head quartermaster for the last 2 1/2 years of the war. I have his sword, revolver & book titled "Regulations for the Army of the Confederate States and for the Quartermaster's Department and Pay Department". The book was found in a barn on the Piedmont battlefield, and given to my uncle by a descendant of the property owner in the 1960s. (Bell must have made a hasty exit from the battle - the Confederates were routed, and Staunton was finally captured by the Union.) M.G. Garber became colonel of the 52nd Va. regiment, was wounded, and returned to Staunton late in the war to serve as a quartermaster - but I think Bell remained the head quartermaster.

Stonewall Jackson's quartermaster was John Alexander Harman. Thomas H. Harman was in the Staunton Artillery. William Henry Harman became colonel of the 5th Va. regiment for a while, later became an aide to Jubal Early and Edward "Alleghany" Johnson, and was killed at the Battle of Waynesboro. These five Harmans were brothers!

I know practically nothing about the Staunton clothing depot, other than its location, and would appreciate any information about it.
