1. There were in existence actually two Spanish Rifle units that served the State of Louisiana during the early part of the war. The first was the Regiment of Cazadores d'Espanola that was the command of Col. Miangoloria. It was considered a volunteer militia unit and consisted of Spanish speaking citizens of Louisiana. As a result of the re-organization of February 1862 it downsized to a battalion. Further, Miangoloria was replaced by Lt. Col. Puig and then Soule.
2. Miangoloria would lead another unit, the Louisiana Defender Battalion.
3. The second Spanish Rifles started as volunteer militia unit but was eventually considered a local defense formation because it had Spanish speaking nationals who were not citizens of Louisiana. This unit was first called the Cazadores d'Espanola too, creating confusion among researchers today. By Fall 61 it had changed its name the the Spanish Legion, and after the reorganization in Feb 82 it joined the European Brigade to serve as the 4th, and then 5th Regiment of the brigade. It also changed its name again, calling itself the "Spanish Regiment." By design (ie, being a local defense formation) it was not suppose to serve outside New Orleans.
