Re: Answering Craig
In Response To: Re: Answering Craig ()

George,

"Well I think Stephen established the right of secession so."

Stephens accepted Georgia's decision, but resisted secession until the vote.

"1. Te the Southern states did not try and alter the Constitution, they drew up their own which I believe was aalmost a mirrow of the US constitution."

They placed stronger protections for slavery.

"2. The Southern states did niot make any agressive move toward the United States.Had the north left them alone ssecession good or bad whould have only affected the states who withdrew."

I would say that firing on Ft. Sumter was an aggressive move. And, remember that before Sumter, federal arsenals across the Deep South had been raided by secessionists and their arms confiscated. That is pretty aggressive.

"3.It was the Southern states rights right to secede when they wanted. Lincoln's election was the straw that broke the camels back."

The right of secession was assumed, not an established fact.

"4. The Southern states had every right to do what they thought best for their people, a right we no longer have."

Not exactly, since the Constitution did provide some restrictions to the states. The states were subject to the Constitution.

"Are your ments historical facts or just your opinion?"

My take on secession is an interpretation. No one can factually say that secession was absolutely legal or absolutely illegal before the Civil War.
