My father was drafted 3 times during World War II. He did not seek an exeption and stated that he was no better than any other man to do his duty. But, because he was in a critical wartime occupation working for the railroads his employer filed for his exemption each time and those exemptions were granted. He was ready to do his duty and could have volunteered. But it was explained to him that he was more important in his job building locomotives that carry thousands of tons of freight to the soldiers, than for him to be carrying a 9 pound rifle. That his talent was needed at home.
That is the common man in most wars, just going to do what he is told to do to further the total war effort. No idealogies or political agendas, just doing what he thinks is best to defend his home and family. The political agendas come from others, who we charge with making those decisions.
