T.R., your post reminds me of my Dad. He was a tool and die maker at Atlantic Steel Co., in Atlanta, when the war started. He and a friend of his went to Philidelphia to get work in a shipyard, figuring it would contribute to the war effort. They were told to return to their jobs in Atlanta. Then they tried to enlist in the Army. Again, they were told to go back to work, and quit trying to leave. Being very young at the time, I don't know yet what they were working on, but the Government sent Dad to Ga. Tech for two years at night, while he continued working his job. And he only had an 8th grade education! Later in the war, I do remember the union wanted to strike for something, and the Army locked them in the plant so they would keep working. We went down on Sundays and visited them. They were sleeping on canvas Army cots and using those God awful wool blankets. His Grandfather had died at Seven Pines in 1862. His dad ws born in 1859, and had instilled a strong work ethic in my Dad. Most of his friends were in the Army, so on Saturday nights all the wives would gather at our house and dance with Dad, He was a very good dancer; I still remember some of those old 78 records. Stan
