While in boot camp at Bambridge, Md in Dec 1945, there was a surprise inspection by our company commander (a Chief Bosn). A boot from Chicago had not washed his clothing, rolled and tied it properly, and in general had a non-shipshape locker.
The chief had the entire company fall out in our skivies and shoes (nothing else) and the occupant of each double decker bunk picked up the bunk and we walked through snow carrying our beds for two hours. The object lesson "teamwork".
After completing our teamwork class, we returned to the barracks and proceeded to administer a G.I. shower to the culprit that created the need for a lesson. The entire contents of his locker along with him were dumped into the shower. He was washed down with the scrub brush which was used to sweep the grinder, needless to say there were bloody marks where the broom was applied with a vigor by a bunch of freezing sailors. He was then instructed to wash all of his clothing. Not a single man was placed on report, and the incident was never mentioned while were were "boots", but that particular sailor became the neatest shipmate in our company.
I ran across him aboard ship while in Korea and he still looked very shipshape. I asked him if he remembered the G.I. Shower and he replied "each time I see an item not properly stowed in my seabag". BTW he was a Petty Officer bosn 2nd at the time we met in Korea.
Hard lessons are remembered.

I would imagine that hard lessons were taught and learned by soldiers in the Civil War.
