I think you're probably right, Chief. Vietnam, as they say, was a captain's war -- maneuver forces were deployed on a company basis, more often than not, and certainly the ground war was characterized by small unit actions led by junior officers. By that same token, I guess the Civil War could be characterized as a general's war -- large-scale actions, with the smallest maneuver unit in many cases being the brigade. That would certainly bring the generals and the privates in closer proximity on the battlefield. Also, at least on the Confederate side (I'm not overly familiar with the northern side of things), generals by and large were more interested in winning the war than in furthering their careers (with some notable exceptions!), because the very existence of their new country was at stake.
