Joe, we only saw the guys in the Great Lakes SID at chow. We didn't know where their barracks was, or what their daily routine was. I just remember that when we saw them at their special table at chow, they always looked like they were scared to death. I can only imagine what those guys were going through. It was pretty clever of the brass to have those guys eat chow on the same mess deck as the rest of us -- it definitely motivated us to keep our noses clean. I'll never forget the sight of those guys eating their chow by the numbers while a petty officer called cadence.
