Re: Ferrell's Bttry. 14th GA Light Art. CS

I have been unable to ascertain engagements they were involved in.

Captain C. B. Ferrell, age 33, volunteered as a Captain in Company C, Montgomery's Georgia Light Artillery* May 6, 1862 at La Grange, Georgia, it appears Co. C became an independent battery September 15, 1862, Ferrell's Lt. Battery, Roddey's Brigade was stationed near Courtland, Alabama November 1864, last recorded as in BGen, P. D. Roddey's Division, his file contains correspondence by the Adjutant General, War Department, with Mrs. C. W. Staten 2447 Fairview Road, N. E., Atlanta, Georgia, dated March 12, 1953, a requisition for forage for the period ending August 30, 1862 records 95 horses, no mules or oxen, in his command, a December 7, 1863 requisition for Ordnance stores was for 2 guns and accessories indicating 150 men in his command, believe this was at Courtland, Alabama, 114 animals on February 1, 1864, another War Department letter, dated August 12, 1949 with Mrs. H. F. Herrmann, R. D. No. 1, Pttsboro, N. C. is found in his file, there are some 117 cards in his file
[Comment, the number of animals in his requisitions would indicate to me he never had more than 3 guns in his battery]

* This company subsequently became Captain Ferrell's Battery (Horse Artillery), Georgia Light Artillery.

The 14th (also known as Montgomery's) Battalion Georgia Light Artillery was organzied about May, 1862, with four companies, A to D. In October, 1862, two additional companies appear to have been organized by transfers from other companies of the battalion and reported as Companies F and G. Captain Wiggin's Battery Arkansas Light Artillery was temporarily attached to this battalion as Company E. The battalion appears to have been disbanded during the latter part of 1862, or the early part of 1863, and the companies afterward recognized as independent batteries.

M266: Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations From the State of Georgia

14th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery (Montgomery's)

14th Artillery Battalion was organized during the fall of 1862 with six companies. The unit was assigned to the Army of Tennessee but served detached much of the time as it was an administrative organization rather than a field command. The different companies served in Tennessee and in North Mississippi, and most were active in the Atlanta Campaign. It is not known how many members surrendered in North Carolina, but Batteries A and E no longer had cannons were serving as infantry. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph T. Montgomery and Major Joseph Palmer were in command. [NPS Soldiers and Sailors System]

Company C, (Ferrell's Battery)

The company was mustered into Confederate service by Maj. Montgomery on May 31, 1862. Captain C. B. Ferrell was Battery ā€œCā€ commander, giving his age as 33 and having volunteered May 6, 1862 in LaGrange, Georgia. The entire company roster lists one Adjutant, three 1st Lieutenants, one Surgeon, one 1st Sergeant, two 2nd (Master) Sergeants, five Sergeants, five Corporals, two Farriers, one Bugler and 154 Privates.
