Ferrell's battery was not in Vicksburg proper, but with Roddey in General J. E. Johnston's Army of Relief and on May 28, 1863 were within a couple of miles of Florence, Miss., when two squadrons of the 7th Kansas, armed with Colt's Revolving Rifles, were " . . . deployed on either side of the road as skirmishers. Proceeding cautiously, the Yanks closed to within 800 yards of the town, before cannoneers of Ferrell's Georgia Battery opened upon them with two guns."
