First let me say thank you very much for your detailed response. I greatly appreciate it. So would it be safe to presume that in, for example, May of 1862 Frost's artillery brigade consisted of Hoxton's, Landis's and Guibor's batteries? I contacted Ranger Tom Parson at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and he said that the battery assigned to Dabney Maury's brigade was... (drum roll please)

...Lucas's battery (the "Jackson Battery"). He said that Teel's Texas battery was assigned to the third brigade of McCown's division. In lurking on this forum recently I ran across a discussion on here that covers that brigade, it was the one with Middleton Johnson's 14th Texas Cav. Regt. (dismounted) and supposedly was to have the 15th, 16th and 17th Texas Cav. Regts. (dismounted) as well, the brigade that the ORs don't list a commander for. Unless I misread the discussion am I correct to say that the 14th was the only one of the four that made it to Corinth? And the other three regts. were diverted back to Little Rock instead? Ranger Parson said that one John Griffith commanded that brigade but I was under the impression that the "brigade" didn't really exist, that it was intended to be formed but that was made impossible when the 15th, 16th and 17th regiments didn't make it across the Mississippi River and instead went to Little Rock. So the 14th was transferred to another brigade (Hogg's/Cabell's brigade?) instead.

I saw the Special Orders # 83 you posted where it says "Chief of Arty to assign a Btry to each Bgde, retaining 3 Btrys for reserve & transfer balance to the chief of Arty, Army of Miss". Was this order carried out? Meaning Beauregard's army got the remaining batteries aside from those that got assigned to the brigades in Van Dorn's three divisions and the three kept for the artillery brigade?
