Re: Dabney Maury's brigade at Corinth May '62

Thanks again Danny for your detailed responses. I'm amazed at the depth of information you have on this. I noticed you said "Hebert’s Bgde with Whitfield cdg in Hebert’s absence" and I had thought that Col. Evander McNair took over Hebert's brigade until he returned from captivity. Was McNair originally filling in for Hebert and then Whitfield became the more "permanent" replacement until Hebert returned? Because in the ORs it shows Special Order # 86 from Asst. Adj. Gen. W.H. Brand by order of Van Dorn part of which says "Rector's regiment is assigned to the Second Brigade, Col. McNair commanding" but this is from 20 March of '62

Regarding Lucas's battery, if it probably wasn't in Maury's brigade do you know what battery might have been assigned to Maury instead?

Oh and I meant to ask you, on the order of battle in the ORs it shows in Dabney Maury's brigade an unidentified Texas cavalry regiment, which it just lists as "____ Texas cavalry regiment (dismounted)" so to try to figure out which one this refers to I looked into the service history of each of the Texas cav. regts. as much as I could and didn't find any that seem to have been at Corinth which aren't already accounted for on the order of battle. What I did find however was that the 12th Texas Cav. Regt. (dismounted) apparently was originally earmarked for transfer to Corinth and had made it as far as Memphis before its orders were changed and it was sent to Arkansas in response to Samuel Curtis's movements like the 15th, 16th and 17th cav. regts. we've discussed. So I'm thinking maybe the folks compiling the order of battle in the ORs ran across a message for Beauregard saying that a Texas cav. regt. was on its way to him and was in Memphis already but they didn't see the rest of the story, that its orders were changed and it went back across the Mississippi River. So they put it in the order of battle as "____ Texas Cavalry Regiment (dismounted)". Does that sound plausible to you or am I grasping at straws here?

Another gap in the ORs' order of battle I found is in Martin Green's brigade of Price's division of the Army of the West. In that brigade one of the units listed is "Priest's Missouri infantry regiment" and I found this must mean Lieut. Col. John W. Priest but he didn't command a regiment as far as I can tell, he was instead in command of a battalion of Missouri infantry. I found on the Pea Ridge order of battle it says that Priest was in command of both the 4th and the 5th Missouri Infantry Battalions

so I was thinking maybe the original intention was to combine these two battalions into one regiment and put Lieut. Col. Priest in command of it, and maybe (if this is the case) the people compiling the order of battle for the ORs saw this message and assumed it must have been carried out, but maybe these orders were changed and they decided not to amalgamate these two battalions but the OR folks didn't see that later message so they put it in the order of battle as "Priest's Missouri infantry regiment". Do you think this might explain it? Or have you seen a more detailed order of battle that clarifies this mystery regiment?

Thanks again Danny for all your help buddy.
