Alexander Stephens tried to crawfish his way out of his “Cornerstone” speech after the war by explaining he was “misquoted”. While sitting in a prison cell he must have seen that speech was making him look bad.
Too many folk on this BB only see the South as good and did no wrong, the North only as evil, but it isn’t so cut and dried. Both did a lot to pave the road to war.
Almost all of my studying was years after I got out of school, we hardly touched on the WBTS in my history classes. I don’t know where folk got the impression I learned from the Yank side of the issue.
