The slavery website noted in my other post will describe how New York was the 2nd largest slave state behind Virginia in the early days of the Republic. The author also notes that slavery was replaced by a contract labor system, whereby former slaves bound themselves to a master for a one-year term of service. It probably renewed like many modern-day magazine subscriptions.
