We frequently read that the war was fought over states rights. However, few people seem to understand the issue that raised Southern concerns before the war. If I hadn't read so many Alabama and Virginia newspapers printed during 1859-61, I wouldn't claim to know much about it. Just for grins, would you or anyone else care to take a crack at it?
