A couple of items not evident from that clip. Mom has been on Dad's case for some time to be more strict with their five-year old son. It's a source of friction that Dad doesn't beat the hell out of little Bobby. Second, Dad had a really bad day at work, and isn't the type to vent at home (or anywhere else).
