Alan, I've waited after getting to this thread to see what others were saying. I think what you may be referring to in your question about states' rights is Douglas' support of "Popular Sovereignty", whereby a territory upon becoming a state could decide by referendum whether to enter the Union as a slave or a free state, the Compromise of 1850 having fallen by the wayside.
