Re: Winning of the war

"Longstreet owed a heavy debt to the Texas Brigade, much (mis)understood, under-estimated, and under-reported. Had there been a Texas Division at Gettysburg with Longstreet following orders, the Union Army would have been soundly beaten." Especially while the 18th Georgia was part of the Texas Brigade, as at Gaines Mill, Second Manassas, and in the Corn Field at Antietam, when Col. Wofford, 18th Rgtl. CO, was in Command of the Texans, Hood having been promoted. The Georgians were transferred to Cobb's Brigade before Fredericksburg, where the 18th Ga. was behind the Stone Wall. When Cobb was killed there, Wofford was made Brigadier. After that time Cobb's Brigade became Wofford's Brigade. They were in the Peach Orchard and Wheat Field the second day at Gettysburg. If Longstreet had attacked on time, I think the results would have been vastly different. Oates' Alabamans might have taken little Round Top, instead of being repulsed by Chamberlain. Stan
