George and Alan, thanks for your replies but I am a little confused. (which is easy to do)
If he was 23 in 1860, he would have been 26 at the time of his enlistment in the Georgia State Guards. Is there any indication why he would have been in the State Guards instead of regular Confederate Service?? And as Alan stated in his reply to my original post:
The only other Civil War record lists Mooty as 2nd Lieutenant of the 37th Georgia Militia Regt., post of West Point GA, January 1865.
Wonder what he was doing the year between the time he was mustered out of the State Guards and the time he is shown as being in the 37th Georgia Militia. He is shown as on detail per GO 24 on one, and on sick furlough on the other muster out roll. Makes you wonder if he was sick in the early part of the war that kept him out of regular service. I am not nearly as familiar with the State Guards as y'all so I guess I just do not have any ideas of what all might have kept him at home instead of in the regular service
But back to my original question, why did Mary have a VA type headstone? I have asked several people about a roster for the Nancy Hart's, but have yet to find anything other than the officers. Mary would have been 16 in the 1860 census, and 19 in '63 at the time of his enlistment in the State Guards and 21 at the time of his service in the 37th. Hopefully we will find out what she actually did to get a VA marker with a Confederate Iron Cross engraved in it.
