In relation to active service, you may be thinking about the Georgia State Line. State Guards never left home and only served for a brief period. Men in the State Line served with Confederate commands during the Atlanta Campaign and took casualties as you describe. The State Guards went our of existence in early February 1864 with no opportunity to catch sight of a Yankee in uniform.
