Alan, you're correct, I was thinking about the Georgia State Line Units during the battle of Atlanta when I posted. And I also agree that there is a mild to strong possibility that W.T. and W.Y. Mooty were the same soldier. Even though he had little military experience in the 2nd Georgia State Guards it might have been strong enough for him to be elected as a 2nd Lieutenant for the 37th Militia, assuming they were also elected. I would think there were few W. Mooty's in Troup County during this time frame. Do you know when the 37th Georgia Militia was formed? Would Mooty's service in the 2nd Cavalry State Guards have exempted him from further conscription? Were there any Georgia State Guard units involved in the battle of Chickamauga in September of 1863? Since William Y. Mooty does have a CMSR in the 2nd Georgia State Guards and since he also shared the same risks and by that I am referring to disease which took so many lives in the War I would believe that he would be qualified for a government stone although at first they were given to Confederate POW's in various Northern Cemeteries. Even Confederate civilians were given Confederate tombstones in 1908 but again they were POW's who had died in Northern prison camps. I would think by 1912 it would be cutting it fairly close for Georgia State Guards who had died after the War for getting government tombstones. Tom may be correct in stating that the family may have paid for both of the tombstones. Just as Confederate pensions were more difficult to receive after the War as time wore on the Confederate stones became more easier to obtain through the government to a certain degree. Today Confederate tombstones from the government are becoming harder to obtain due to the revisions of the National Cemetery Administration.
