Alan, Do you know the soldier's unit?
I am almost sure he was with the 5th Iowa. I know for sure he was with McCook. I know the path that McCook took after crossing the river at Philpot's Ferry. And as I said he was captured near Rock Mills not Rockville.
McCook went through Rock Mills, I cannot remember if he went to Wedowee, or if he turned North trying to get back to Sherman, who was in Marietta or Dallas at the time. I will have to look that up. There could have been numerous reasons this guy was lagging behind, and was captured. I am not even going to try to guess, and I don't remember if I ever read it or not. I will have to look back to see.
"For what it's worth, Boykin organized the "Ben Hill Volunteers" at Antioch." That is great information to know. I was just going by what I was told, but this makes a lot more sense. Later day road from LaGrange crossed the river, went a couple of miles and split. The left fork took you through Antioch, then to Glenn and then to Rock Mills. The right took you through Liberty Hill, then to Houston, then to Glenn, and then to Rock Mills. I do not know if the road was all the same road back then or not. It very well could have been and just turned back toward Liberty Hill around Antioch. I can picture it in my mind as being either way. The West Point Lake project has altered some of these roads, especially the Antioch Rd. You have to be familiar with the area to be able to access any of this area.
