George, you solved a couple of the mysteries, I was wrong about it being two different men. But the way I read one post, he was assigned to West Point, but the way this reads he surrendered in West Point. But I am still a little confused, did he resign from the 2nd Ga. State Guards and reenlist in the 37th militia, or did they merge. In your post it shows him serving more than 18 months, 2 years, and 3 years, so I would assume that the units merged or became all a part of the 37th, so a total of his time was 2 years,if he did enlist in 1863. (maybe I need to go back and read that again) This also answers the question of what he was doing between the time he enlisted in the State Guards in 1863 and the time he was in West Point. This also answers the question of Mary being his wife. Several years ago I posted something about a diary that was written by a Union soldier, a part of McCooks Cavalry that was involved in the battle of Brown's Mill. This soldier was captured somewhere near Rock Mills, Ala., and was marched back through Liberty Hill where they stopped and ate lunch at a Capt. Boykin's with the 87th Confederates, but someone posted that it had to be the 37th militia because there was no 87th. And Capt. Boykin had resigned the regular army and reenlisted as a private in the 37th. The original home of Capt. Boykin is still there, this is what I was using as a reference to the location of where I assumed W.Y. lived and how much closer it was to Liberty Hill than it would have been to West Point. So thanks a lot for all this information. But this still leaves me in the dark about how Mary got a Confederate headstone.
