How he evaded military service for so long is a mystery as he was of the age of conscription and should have been drafted. That is, unless he held a vital position which allowed exemption. However, the 1860 census does not list an occupation. In 1880 he is listed as a Farmer.
As far at service with the 37th, this man is listed on two rosters as W. T. Mooty, which would appear to be another individual. I have not been able to identify where the 37th Militia originated , believe a Home Guard unit.
I thought perhaps that Mary E. Mooty may have served under her maiden name. I found a Mary E. Johnson, Antioch, Troup, Georgia, age 16 in the 1860 census and a Mary E. Watley, Antioc, Troup. Georgia, age 14.
I could not find a M. E. by either name in applicable rosters.
