The State of Georgia organized militia commands by political boundaries. In this example the 37th Georgia Senatorial District was the 37th Georgia Militia Regiment. Please under stand that a man did not join the militia; he already belonged by virtue of where he lived. Men were assigned to companies by election beats or precincts. You should be able to find a map of Troup County showing these lines.

William T = William Y Mooty. We could assume this because the name Mooty is so unusual in Georgia, there being fewer than ten adult white males by this name in Georgia during the census years of 1850, 1860 and 1870. As described earlier, the captital cursive letters "Y" and "T" can look alike, so a war department clerk should be excused for making this transcription mistake. Also, I found a list of officers for this company of the 37th Georgia Militia. The name on the list for 2nd Lieutenant is clearly William Y Mooty.
