One more thing. To the gentleman who's friend was a Mooty. I have to tell you to disregard the information about the Mooty name change due to a family feud.
I have done extensive research on the Mooty name. Thomas & Joseph Mooty were brothers who came to America in the late 1600's. Mooty is not a "made up" name but, does go back in time.
As to William Y. Mooty's service in the Confederacy, he was and did serve along with Payne in the war. They were in the war in North Georgia, then in the battle of Atlanta. Both men were in Savannah at the close of the war and both Payne and William walked back home to LaGrange, Ga.
William had to use a cane as he had been wounded and perhaps accounts for the sick days granted him.
Now, As to the Lt. W.T. Mooty, I cannot speak because he is not related, if he existed.
William Y's father was William Alexander, his father was also William Alexander. Both of these men are buried in the Woods cemetery in Heard county.
When William and Payne were at the war, a group of yankee soldiers passed by their farm in Heard county. These yankees were coming from Rock Springs, AL. and were going to Atlanta to meet up with Shermans army. As they noticed a farmer ploughing the field, they stopped and conficated the mule. Also, they found W.A. Mooty's beautiful horse hidden in the orchard. Conficating his $300.00 horse, a great coat, two newly made shirts and to beat all, they took two pair of his underware!!
This is information that can be found at the National Archives because William A. applied for compensation after the war.
Due to the fact that he had two sons on active duty in the war, he was denied any compensation.
William's wife was Mary Emma Pearson. The Mooty's came to LaGrange, Ga. from Fairfield District, S.C. in the early 1830's when LaGrange was opened to the white man.
Mary Emma's grandfather was General John Pearson, Rev. war soldier. William's ggrandfather was James Mooty, Rev. soldier.
