You bring up a point that I've been amazed about for years. Folks were physically smaller during the WBTS for a number of reasons but I got to tell you, "tough old birds" probablly doesn't do them justice. You look at photos and realize that often times they would just hunker down in a depression or whatever hole they could find and toss a blanket over or around themselves and managed not to freeze to death, meanwhile eating around 1200 calories a day if lucky and still had enough oomph to get up and run and fight and tote a 20+ pound gun around. I can hardly imagine.
