Stephen, I've never run into an officer like Robert E. Lee. He's really hard to pigeon-hole. He was patrician, but not arrogant. Highly intelligent, but didn't "talk down" to people. A warrior, but hated war. Very religious, but not a zealot. The highest ranking general in the Confederate Army, but addressed privates as "sir". Wealthy and privileged, but wore a plain, unadorned uniform, and ate the same rations as his troops. He had a strict code of honor, but didn't demand that others adhere to his personal standards.
I don't know, Stephen, maybe a man like Lee only comes along once in the life of a nation.
I keep a half-life sized bronze bust of Lee on my desk. Whenever I'm inclined to be petty or rude, that face staring back at me always snaps me back. I try to emulate him as best I can, but I'll never measure up.
He was one of a kind.
