An example of Lee's forebearance that was often mentioned by his aides involved his religious beliefs. Lee was a deeply religious man, but not in the "in your face" way of some modern fundamentalist Christians. When someone cursed in Lee's presence, his aides would detect a slight wince on Lee's face, but he did not reprimand the curser or embarrass him with moral outrage. Lee led by example, by living the ideals he cherished. We could sure use a little more of that these days.
