Um, I thought the "Forty acres and a mule in New England" comment was a joke. It certainly was not an actual offer Lincoln could have made.
Do you guys actually think Lincoln could have or should have freed all the slaves in the Union, given them land and property and voting rights all single-handedly by 1862?
