"See the letter of Asa Piper, Co C. 62nd Al. Inf. "on the 9th of April the U.S. troops charged our thin line withe negros first, and we slaughtered them fast, some 2000 being killed in a few minutes..... then we were charged by five lines of battle (white troops) and captured."
The assault at Fort Blakely was carried out by roughly 16,000 men. They took 3,423 prisoners and over 40 guns. See Battles and Leaders Vol. IV, p. 411.
Hawkins’ USCT division lost 31 killed and 285 wounded at Fort Blakely. The total casualties for all U.S. forces for the whole Mobile campaign from March 17-April 12, 1865 were between 1,507 and 1,678. See O.R. Series I, Vol. 49, Chapt. 61, pp. 110-115. Even Anderson's "History of the First Missouri Confederate Brigade" relates that the USCT fought well at Fort Blakely.
