I agree that I provided some assumptions about Douglass' quotation. The actual source---beyond it being attributed to Douglass---was not given. Without such information, we have no idea when, where, or why Douglass made the comment. Thus, we are left to speculate on those matters. That speculation may be accurate, or it may be completely off.
That is why documenting sources is so important.
