Are there any descendants on this board? My great grandfather was in Company K and was wounded and captured at Antietam.

General Micah Jenkins and Asbury Coward were the recruiters for this regiment. It was made up of hand picked men for special service as sharpshooters, but this never came about because there were so few Southern soldiers to begin with. They recruited anyone they could get when the war got started. There is a good book written by Micah Jenkins descendant entitled "The Struck Eagle." I would recommend it to anyone that had an ancestor in the 5th SC Vols or Palmetto Sharpshooters.
