I'll join in belatedly on the Palmetto Sharpshooters. I can't help you with their uniforms when originally raised, but during the late summer of 1863, while Jenkins' Brigade, of which the PSS were a part, were idling their time around Petersburg and Richmond -- they were held out of the Gettysburg Campaign -- Micah Jenkisn managed to get brand new uniforms for the entire brigade, which were of a blue shade, I'm suspecting a light blue tending toward gray. Jenkins was inordinately proud of the men of the unit -- had them parade through Petersburg to show them off, not necessarily a good use of the amnpower; the men seemed to resent it. At any rate, the brigade was the last of the infantry units sent west with Longstreet, and arrived the night that the fighting at Chickamauga ended. The brigade was assigned to the extreme left of the Confederate line around Chattanooga, at the foot of Lookout Mountain, and in close proximity to the Federal picket line across Chattanooga Creek. The birght new uniforms made them stand out, and apparently the Federal pickets, who were generally willing to live and let live, and had declared a truce with the pickets of the other units of Hood's Division, singled out the South Carolinians, blaming them for starting the war, and sniped at the South Carolinians unceasingly, able to identify them by the bright new uniforms which stood out from the rags of the other units.
