Stewart Scates enlisted in Company M, South Carolina Palmento Sharp Shooters May 7, 1862 at Limestone Springs, S. C., wounded in the abdomen August 29/30, 1862, "supposed to be mortally wounded at Manassas," His file has comingled cards for Jonathan S. Scates, Company M and a document of his father John Scates, Union District, S.C., filing claim for his pay and allowances, died August 30, 1862, Battle of Manassas [I would guess that these are the same fellow, Jonathan Stewart Scates] [no age given]
Lewis Scates, age 22, enlisted in Company F, 15th South Carolina Infantry August 29, 1861 at Union C. H., died from wound received the the engagement on Hilton Head, November 7, 1861. Died in hands of the enemy a day or two afterwards
James Pinkney Scates enlisted in Company K, South Carolina Palmento Sharp Shooters July 10, 1861 at Summerville, transferred to Company H May/June 1862, wounded in the arm May 6, 1864, admitted Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia July 5,1864, Rheumatismus, furloughed for 20 days August 9, 1864, admitted Jackson Hospital October 8, 1864, gunshot wound, minie ball, left leg October 7, furloughed for 30 days October 18, recorded on the Jan/Feb 1865 as AWOL [Note: Most likely his way back to his unit was blocked by Federal forces]
Pinkney Scates, age 20, enlisted in Company I, 6th South Carolina Infantry** July 10, 1861 at Summerville, S. C., wounded severely in abdomen December 20, 1861 in the battle near Dranesville, Virginia, no further records
William Scates, age 24, enlisted in Company I, 6th South Carolina Infantry July 10, 1861 at Summerville, S. C., admitted Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, November 15, 1861, Rubeola (Measles), transferred to S. C. Hospital November 20, paid $50 bounty April 3, 1862, no further records
W. H. Scates enlisted in Company H, South Carolina Palmento Sharp Shooters June 28, 1862 at Spartanburg, recorded as Sick in Hospital on the May/June 1862 muster, no further records
**The 6th Regiment South Carolina Infantry entered the State service on April 11, 1861, for 12 months and was mustered into Confederate States service during June and July, 1861. Subsequently it was broken up and a number of men re-enlisted in the Palmetto Regiment South Carolina Sharp Shooters, the 5th Regiment South Carolina Infantry, the 13th Battalion South Carolina Infantry and the 17th Regiment South Carolina Infantry
