From Sources that I have read, South Carolina troops were very well uniformed during the war. Union Regiments commented on them being better dressed than their own men.
The Palmetto Sharpshooters had a gray uniform with green cuffs, and collars early in the war.
I read that at the time of the Battle of the Wilderness they were issued very dark gray jackets which looked like Union uniforms at a distance and they had to turn them inside out to avoid being a target of friendly fire.
Get the book "The Struck Eagle" by Micah Jenkins gg grandson if you want more information.
One great story is the battle of the regiments at Frayser's Farm?
The 5th SC vols and the Palmetto Sharpshooters got seperated from the main army and so did 2 Union regiments. The 5th SC and the Palmetto SS squared off toe-to-toe against these Union regiments in a battle all their own. I believe that it was the 16th Michigan and another Union Regiment from Massachusetts or Pennsylvania,I can't remember.
Both the 5th SC and the Palmetto Sharpshooters and the two Union regiments blasted away at each other. The South Carolina troops anihilated both Union regiments. The 16th Michigan was destroyed almost to the last man and the other regiment didn't fare that much better.
One ironic note, at the surrender at Appomattox, it was the 16th Michigan that was directly across the PSS.
I would love to see some photos of Palmetto Sharpshooters in Uniform.
