David:
I don't recall seeing anything on a general issue of new uniforms to any of the troops from S.C. after 1863 -- there may have be one or more, but I don't recall seeing anything. By that stage of the war, the Confederacy was scrapping the bottom of the logistics, as well as the manpower, barrel. I have run across cases of a number of men who had been invalided home, but were called back up in those last months of the war. I'm sure that some did it out of a sense of patriotism, and others were declared fit for duty by the surgeons and thus subject to enlistment or conscription. Since he joined his old unit, its pretty clear to me that he enlisted, but whether it was under the threat of conscription, is hard, if not impossible, to tell. The thing is, he WENT, when so many men were finding excuses to desert or to continue on wound furlough.
