I am trying to assist the Australian descendants of a former Charleston, South Carolina resident who was an American Civil War veteran, to acquire information on his birth and birth family.

Thomas Horton was born in 1817 in New York and migrated to South Carolina where he participated in the American Civil War and was said to have served in the "Palmetto Sharpshooters". On a marriage certificate he was listed as Thomas Horton, mariner. After the war he migrated to Australia where Thomas Horton died in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia under the name of Thomas Love Horton. None of his descendants know anything about his birth and have asked me to try and help find something for them.

Kevin Raymond Horton, born January 3, 1925, is the last surviving ‘grandchild’ of Thomas Horton.

Any information on him, his birth or his family would be greatly appreciated.
