I caught that History Channel show on "Hillbillies", hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus, over the weekend. Seems the term redneck came to be during the battle between union and non-union labor in south eastern Kentucky coal mines in the early 1900's. The pro union fellows wore red bandanas around their necks to show solidarity against the corrupt mine owners and local vigilante style lawmen in the area. I wonder how the term bacame to refer to poor white southerners? Anybody have a view. It also seems that the "Democrat Darling" Jim Webb is gaining a rather large following with his embracing of his southwestern Virginia upbringing. I can honestly say that I held him suspect during the elections. Can he and the very few like him hold any hope for our true Southern Heritage and History? So far I can't say he shows real conservative qualities in his Senate seat.
