I bow to greater knowledge, but have also heard "Cracker" derived from the long whips whose loud crack drove and steered cattle, especially in Florida in early times, before the West became more known as cattle country. Central Florida still raises numbers of cattle. Cattle egrets keep ticks off them. Stan
