Remember Oliver Howard's Eleventh Corps was comprised mainly of German immigrants. They got a good whooping at Chancellorsville and behaved like scared kids at Gettysburg and lost favor with the Federal Command from then on. Obviously the Germans worked out their difficulties in combat in the 1900s.
